“Paul ha traducido nuestro folleto sobre el Plan Dinamización Serranía de Ronda al inglés y al alemán. Lo hizo rápido y a un precio aceptable. No dudo en recomendarle.”

Real ale in Spain? – Almost...
Samstag, den 11. Dezember 2010 um 00:00 Uhr

A brewpub claiming to produce English-style real ale, using traditional methods and all natural ingredients, opened recently in Andalucía.

Fabrica de Cerveza Kettal (FCK), located in Los Barrios (Cádiz), claims to be the first micro-brewery in living memory in the province.  Methinks it could well be the first in the whole of Spain!

According to owners Mercedes Lynch and Tim Revill, FCK is part of the revolution against mass-produced products, which is growing throughout the food industry.

“Consumers are growing aware that many foodstuffs contain all sorts of chemical additives to give them the flavour and appearance that big companies think the average consumer expects. At FCK we use the flavours that nature provides, with no unnatural additives.”

FCK's Brewmaster, Australian Jonah Jones, adds: “We brew English-style ales, which are kegged and served chilled and under pressure. CAMRA would not approve, but cask beer just will not survive at this latitude and temperature.”

So, there we have it – it’s not real ale at all, although the kegged version has got to taste better than anything else on offer down here, I suppose.

Jones continues: “Our beers are made only from natural ingredients: malted barley, hops, yeast and water. They are unpasteurised and chemical-free.”

The company is so confident of the purity of its beers that it offers a free pint - hair of the dog - to any client who can prove s/he has suffered a hangover from drinking Kettal beer. So far they have had no takers.

FCK’s brewline is 7.5 barrels (1,225 litres), meaning a theoretical maximum of 450,000 litres per annum, working flat out. They produce six types of beer throughout the year, as well as seasonal specialities. The company hopes to begin bottling its beers in January 2011.

The bar is open from 12.00 to 24.00 hrs, every day of the year. The restaurant serves food from 13.30 to 15.45 and from 20.30 to 23.45.

FCK aims to offer customers an integral experience: drinking real beer, watching sport from the comfort of the sofa, having a game of pool and dining. The bistro-type Tex-Mex menu offers a pick-and-mix from a wide range of dishes or a full three-course meal.
