"A welcome haven for us weary travellers.  A place to charge the batteries and enjoy the beauty of Ronda.  The apartment is a home away from home.  Your books, CDs and DVDs were very welcome!  This area to us is the real Spain."

Three Jamies in one day PDF

Jamie Oliver

My mobile phone rang one lunchtime in the middle of June.
“Hi, Paul, this is Jamie...”.
“Hi, Jamie, how are YOU...?”
I answered somewhat over-enthusiastically, especially since I didn’t know which Jamie it was who was calling me.
Could it be Jamie Oliver? The Naked Chef? I mused. No, he doesn’t have my number. And anyway I barely know Britain’s top TV chef, having spoken to him only once and then rather briefly as he served me my dish of paella the evening before.

I’d first heard this remarkable singing voice, as I sat early in January 2008 by an open window in my apartment in Ronda, Andalucía. The song was playing on the radio. I heard it several more times over the following days and discovered that it was a young lady from Málaga called Diana Navarro.

Feria de Ronda

Little did I know when I set off for a week’s holiday in southern Spain that it would change my life. The first week in September is the annual feria in Ronda in Andalucía. This beautiful Moorish town, dubbed the City of Dreams by the German poet Rilke, is the home of modern bullfighting. Back in the 18th century Pedro Romero, a native of Ronda, was the first to ‘fight’ the bull on foot, and the feria is the annual festival to celebrate this fact. It was September 2008 and I was heading there to relax after a busy summer renovating a friend’s house in Luxembourg.

The telephone rang.  It was the Director’s secretary.

The boss wants to see you next Tuesday at 11.00am!

Sorry, it’s half term and I’m on leave!

Five minutes pass.  The telephone rings again.

He says: Be there, or else!

Oh, dear, I thought!  What have I done wrong?  Then I discovered our esteemed Director had a three-line whip on four of us.

What have we done?

Are you awake?
Yep. Can’t sleep.
Me neither.
Are you thinking what I’m thinking?
Probably...
My God! What have we done?

What have we done?

As we turned the corner between two huge rocks, we glimpsed Ronda shimmering in the distance, white and bright atop its huge cliff. Moments later it disappeared from view, but then, suddenly, there it was again in all its glory as we drew nearer to our destination.
