Deutsch and español? PDF

That’s a strange combination of languages!

Throughout my life people have invariably commented that they find my degree subjects an unusual combination.  Maybe so, but it's never been a problem, neither in my career nor in my life.

My career? 15 years teaching both languages in three different schools in England, and 15 as an education inspector overseeing modern languages provision in schools.

As for my life in general?  Well, a bit like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates (ie, “Life is like a ... – you never know what you’re gonna get!”), it was pure chance that I came to study either language and back then, I certainly didn’t know what was in store for me!

I chose German instead of Biology in 3rd year at school, and I was encouraged to learn a new language from scratch at university and picked Spanish because I didn’t fancy the alternatives on offer, namely Russian or Italian.

Now retired, living happily in Spain and married to a German, it’s turned out to be the perfect combination!
