"A welcome haven for us weary travellers.  A place to charge the batteries and enjoy the beauty of Ronda.  The apartment is a home away from home.  Your books, CDs and DVDs were very welcome!  This area to us is the real Spain."

Birthday day out PDF

Not only was today – 18 May 2012 – the day that Facebook shares were put on sale, it was also my birthday. What to do? We decided on a train journey through Secret Andalucía.

Up early we caught the train from Ronda to Algeciras, along the route of Mr Henderson’s railway, as this stretch through the beautiful Guadiaro valley is known. Sir Alexander Henderson was the Scottish railway engineer who built the line at the end of the 19th Century.

After an hour and a half of stunning scenery, we arrived at a rather windy Algeciras. This was my first visit to the deep-sea port and will probably be my last. With five hours to kill before our return train, there really wasn’t enough to do. However, after a stroll round the market, the old part and the shops, we settled down for a leisurely lunch of tapas.

After an equally stunning journey back, seen from the other side of the train, we headed off to Montejaque for drinks with friends…. And more tapas, before returning home – tired but happy.

We did this trip a few years back. Arrived at Algeciras station for the return journey with return tickets in hand at the timetabled hour, only to be told the train was returning on the correct route (ultimate destination Granada) but would not be carrying passengers. Sat on the train, we figured possession is 9/10ths of the law and were duly rewarded with a train that took just us, non-stop, to Benaojan!

Glad you had a nice day. It was lovely having tapas with you and Rita last night at the Hotel Montejaque during a noisy Feria! xxx
