Think twice before you drink and drive!
If you drink and drive, and are caught, you may now go to prison, instead of just being fined. Since the reform of the penal code, 793 drivers in Malaga province alone have been arrested or charged for driving over the limit. At least fifty have been imprisoned for between three and six months for traffic crimes.
All in all, police are tightening up on driving in excess of the speed limit and for not being able to produce their driving licence. In the past, police have been fairly lenient with regard to traffic crimes, and the worst that could happen was that you were fined. Since the reform of the penal code in December 2007, however, they have been cracking down more heavily.
Alhaurin de la Torre prison has seen a huge increase in inmates imprisoned for between three and six months for driving offences. British drivers should be aware that the alcohol limit is lower than in the UK. Over 60 milligrammes of alcohol to a litre of breath expelled into a breathalyser and you’re in trouble.
A spokesman for the guardia civil said recently: “In the past, drivers who knocked down or caused deaths when over the alcohol limit, were not incarcerated. This was intolerable. Now, if drivers do not heed the law through a sense of civic duty, maybe the threat of a period behind bars will have an effect.”
We have been warned!
