Yes, we’d been in the same house in a small Cheshire village for 24 whole years. In that time we had two children, three cats and four extensions to the house. The kids, born after three and seven years respectively, had flown the nest, the cats had all, at different times, headed off to the great big cattery in the sky, and our standard three-bedroomed, one-bathroomed detached house had metamorphosed into a four-bedroomed home, with two reception rooms, a study, a music room, two bathrooms, three WCs and a laundry room. Oh, and a huge first floor balcony overlooking the adjacent park. Then our marriage collapsed, I left, and my home address changed five times in the following five years! There were 18 months in a beautiful farmhouse overlooking Anglesey in North Wales, followed by another year and a half in my mum’s tiny bungalow in a town in the north west of England, four months in a Victorian detached villa in the same town, several lengthy spells in between in an apartment in Andalucía and the last year and a bit in a renovated village house in the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda. I’m about to change address again as we negotiate for a larger house in another of the pueblos blancos round here. If that transpires, I hope to be settled again and to remain in the same house for the next 24 years - at least! Oh, and by the way, the Victorian villa and the village house are for sale. After living in one house for 24 years, I then lived in 24 in one year! Or so it seemed...
