The series of one-day strikes, which were due to start at Easter and continue throughout the summer, has been suspended following an agreement between AENA, the Spanish Airports Authority, and the main trades unions involved, who were protesting against the proposed privatisation of several Spanish airports and the ensuing loss of jobs. The proposals, which safeguard jobs in the airports scheduled for privatisation, such as Barajas (Madrid) and El Prat (Barcelona), were voted on by union members. The results of the ballot, announced at 21.00 last night, showed that 70 per cent of members of CC OO, UGT and USO, representing 85% of the workforce, were in favour of the agreement. So far, nothing on this story has appeared in British newspapers nor on UK news websites, but it has been widely reported in the Spanish Press. The planned 22 days of strikes by Spanish airport workers are to be called off. The announcement will be made formally today, 25 March, after the results of a ballot by workers was announced last night, amid huge relief in the Spanish tourism industry and amongst airline passengers worldwide.
