I became a granddad today when my step-daughter gave birth to her third child, a daughter. At around midday today in Heilbronn Hospital in Germany, little Lotta entered the world four days early weighing in at a healthy 3.5 kilos.

Mum and baby are doing so well that they are already at home – no sticking around in hospital in Deutschland. Here in Spain it is normal for mother and child to remain in hospital for 48 hours, just in case.

I now have three step-grandchildren, Anton (5), Madita (3) and Lotta and will no doubt acquire some more when my two children and Mrs W’s two sons get going ...
