"Thanks for all your help interpreting for me at Ronda hospital. Although some of the consultants do speak excellent English they are obviously much happier conversing in their mother tongue. I would have no hesitation in recommending you to others."

Just two days to go and what happens? First the Hausfrau tells me she’s forgotten to pack smart clothes for me for the civil wedding in Talheim on Thursday, and then we discover that the venue we thought we’d booked for the champagne reception after the church wedding in Maulbronn on Saturday has been hired to someone else!

My God!  Are we destined not to marry?

Not to worry, a future brother-in-law has come to the rescue with some suitable clothing – he has a similar build to me, ie tubby – and we’re pretty sure we’ll be able to find an alternative site for the champagne reception..., aren’t we?

This all reminds me of similar examples of forgetfulness that occurred many years ago.  First of these was when I was best man at my brother’s wedding in 1974 and I forgot my shoes! I had to dash to a shoe shop on the morning before the wedding to buy a new pair.  The following year my brother reciprocated when he was best man at my first wedding – he forgot his suit!

I wonder what he’ll forget this time – he’s best man again! Bad choice, maybe (only joking, Bro!)

On a couple of more positive notes, we were at least able to meet with the restaurant owner and agree the menu for the wedding breakfast!

And my future granddaughter got a super hat to wear!
